"Vanessa!" I heard a faint sound in the distance.
"Vanessa!!!" I heard the same voice, only louder this time.
"VANESSA!!!" I snapped back into reality. The teacher stood in front of the white board, clearly annoyed.
"Where is Burundi located?" the teacher asked.
"In Asia," I replied, not even bothering to glance at the clock, because I already knew from countless times that there were exactly twelve more seconds before the bell rang. Now eleven, ten-
"Wrong!" the Mrs. Jones said with a tinge of amusement in her voice. "It's in Africa." Some of the other students in the class snickered, but I didn't care. Five, four, three,
"Stay after class, will you, Vanessa. I have some things to go over with you," the teacher said. Two, one-
RIINNNGGGGG!
The bell rang and the classroom swirled around me, becoming fainter by every second.
"You're new! Here, let me get you a slate," a girl with pigtails. Confused, I looked around at my surroundings. There were wooden chairs and tables, as well as dull colored objects. When the girl came back, she handed me the slate, and I asked,
"Don't you have any computers in this classroom?" The girl looked at me with a strange expression on her face. I continued,
"Or some i-pads or phones... or maybe some electronics?"
"I don't know what that is," she said, dragging me outside where the students, and what I expected was a teacher sat. Then, it hit me, I had traveled back in time. Panicked, I ran around, desperately searching for a way back.
"Today, let us study the different types of plants..." The teacher droned on and on about the plants.
"You!" she called pointing at me, "What is the name of that tree over there?" I looked in the direction that she was now pointing to and saw a dark green tree.
"Oh, um..." I hesitated, looking for a way out of this. I took my best guess, "A pine tree?"
"Wrong!" She slapped me on the cheek, most likely leaving red fingermarks on my face.
"Any other answers?" She looked around the room slowly eying each of the students.
"Spruce," a boy with brown hair and freckles replied. I subconsciously touched my left cheek where the teacher had slapped me. After giving a few more questions to the other students, she moved onto the next topic, which was on twisters. This time, I paid attention listening in detail to the lesson. To my surprise, it wasn't actually that boring.
When the teacher called on me for the second time, I answered with a detailed explanation. The teacher raised her eyebrows at me, and dismissed the class. The setting swirled, and this time, I was back in the classroom, right where I belonged. Somehow, the time stayed the same, even when I was gone. Once all of the students piled out of the classroom, I walked up to the teacher. She started to speak, but I interrupted her.
"I know what this is about. I'm sorry. I should've paid attention in class. I promise I'll try harder tomorrow." The teacher looked shocked, but immediately covered it with a genuine smile.
"I know. you will try hard," she said beaming at me, which made me feel a sudden rush of pride. I know you will try hard, those words rushed through my brain as I stepped out of the classroom, knowing that my life will never be the same again.
