Her muscles were aching and her clothes were already drenched with sweat, but her brown eyes were alive with the thrill of a fight. She grinned as she neared her foe. He had already lost the fight the moment he had volunteered.
As soon as she was close enough she dived, finding her grip on the earth, and twisting in time to stick out her legs and bring her opponent down before he even knew what was happening. With a loud groan he fell to the ground, little clouds of dust lifting off of the ground. Panting she collapsed next to him, the quiet of the forest taking over once again.

They had been sparring in an open place in the forest close to their camp. At the breaking of dawn she had managed to sneak out of her tent, fully dressed in her usual flowy trousers and shirt, her hair in a messy bun with the shortest strands already sticking out.

He had waited for her at the edge of the forest, hands in his pockets, casually leaning against a tree. She had smiled when she saw him. So familiar in his dark clothes, the way he had straightened at the sight of her, slowly moving his gaze over her body, a light shade of pink colouring his face. She had pretended not to notice and they had walked into the forest without exchanging a word.

'Remind me never to try and beat you ever again,' he said after a while, his breathing calmed down.

She smiled and closed her eyes, savouring the cool morning breeze filling the open space, caressing her face. Although the sun was still low, she could already feel the heat of the southern summer. 'I have been able to beat you ever since I was eleven years old, Mason. Please don't tell me you forgot about all those times I kicked your ass.'

He chuckled. 'That is true, I just hoped my luck had changed.' He sighed, and she heard him move around, his arm lightly brushing hers. 'This was my last chance to beat you before your bond would settle.' She nodded, aware of his eyes on her face. Once her bond was settled she would take over from her father as leader of the tribe. She knew the stories. She would follow the voice of the wind, leading her tribe wherever it send her, but leaving little time for much else.

'I won't be far, you know,' she mumbled, knowing deep down inside that that was a lie. Her father had told her mother the same thing, but once he could hear the wind, that was the only thing he listened to.

She rolled around and probbed herself up on her elbows, looking directly into Mason's grey eyes, determination painting her face. 'Since it's my nineteenth birthday, the queens guard is coming today to monitore my settling,' she said, a smile uncurling on her lips, 'but that doesn't mean we can't have a little bit of fun before they arrive.' Mason, who was leaning on one elbow, looked up at her, a grin on his face.

'You never cease to amuse me,' he murmurred as he got up, extending a hand to her. She took it and exclaimed a soft gasp as he pulled her up in a tight embrace, his head resting on hers. She startled and for a moment the only thing she heard was the wind rustling the leaves of the surrounding trees and the wild beating of her own heart.

She closed her eyes, drinking in his pressence. Feeling the slow rise and fall of his chest, his body pressed against hers. His arms wrapped around her shoulders, keeping her close to him. She could feel every muscle underneath his shirt as she placed her hands on his back.

'Don't leave,' she whispered, breaking their sweet silence. He tensed at her words and as he moved back she could see that his brows were furrowed, his eyes not quite meeting hers.

'I...' Her voice broke, but she swallowed and straightened her back, not wanting to show him the feelings eating her alive from the inside. 'I don't want you to leave.' He let go of her then, his jaws tight. His hands clenching and unclenching at his sides.

'You know I can't stay,' he said, his voice coarse. He took a step back, looking everywhere but at her.

She felt it then, a soft tugging at her core. As if a hand was reaching inside of her to pull something out. Something of which she hadn't known it was there. Her breath caught in her throat.

Something was wrong. This wasn't supposed to happen.

Her vision blurred, and she felt her body weaken. She took a careful step towards Mason, but before she could utter a word the world was spinning around her and she was falling. She didn't feel the ground as darkness swallowed her whole.514Please respect copyright.PENANAuUlmOXwUq3
The moment she woke up she could feel that something was off. She was lying on her mattress, a heavy blanket covering her aching body. Mason was propped up on a pile of pillows next to her, his dark brown hair ruffled and his eyes closed. Hushed voices could be heard from outside of her tent. 8964 copyright protection510PENANAACdti2euN1 維尼

She sat up, barely able to keep in a groan. Next to her Mason stirred, but his breathing stayed even. She looked around. It had always been a small tent. There was just enough space for a mattress, a little table with sitting pillows and a separate washing space which also served as a closet.

Her breathing stopped as she felt it again, a soft tugging. Something was trying to get out. She closed her eyes, allowing the feeling to spread. Letting it build inside of her and welcoming the strange fullness it made her feel. She had heard stories about the settling, but they never involved fainting. So she reached within herself, desperate for answers, and found nothing. Then, all of a sudden, a rush of warmth causing her to collapse, leaving her gasping for air. Alright, no more digging today.

Instead, she focussed on the conversation taking place just outside of her tent. She could recognise two voices, her mother and her grandmother, but the others were unfamiliar to her. There had to be at least three, maybe four, others. Male speakers with ruff voices. She could not hear what they were saying, but something in the tone of her mother's voice made her feel cold.

She jumped as a hand clasped over her mouth, another one on her shoulder. From the corner of her eye she could see Mason, a strange look in his eyes. She suppressed the colour threatening to rise to her cheeks and kept still. He let go of her once he noticed her stare and put a finger to his lips, motioning for her to be quiet.

She could see the strain on his face and realised that he was listening to the conversation. With his heightened senses he would be able to hear what was being said, so she waited, following every line of his body with her eyes. He was tense. The way he stood, slightly hunched, his head tilted towards the conversation, told her something was happening.

When the voices stopped Mason turned back to her. Pointing at her mattress, he took two quick steps and was sitting on the pile of pillows again, his face a blank. When she continued looking at him, her brows furrowed, he pointed at her mattress again and this time, although confused, she did as she was told and lay back down.

She had just closed her eyes when she heard the footsteps from outside of her tent. There was a sudden flash of light and she knew the strange men had entered, feeling their presence in the small space and their eyes on her.

'She is asleep,' Mason said, his voice was stern. She could hear him shift in his seat.

'You will have to come back later,' her mother said. Not a question. 'If you would please follow me.' A sudden flood of light told her her mother had opened the tent again.

But she could feel the men closing in, ignoring her mother. She suddenly realised who they were. She must have been asleep for hours if the queens guard was already here.
Every step they took, pressure build inside of her. The odd feeling of something wanting out.

She was only barely able to keep it in when the guards stopped next to her mattress. A hand was already hovering over her face when someone coughed curtly, Mason, and the hand disappeared. Without any exchange of words the party left, leaving her and Mason behind, creating a cold emptiness in her tent.
