The Most Embarrassing Moment of My Life - The Wrong Liam

There are two kinds of embarrassing moments.

The first kind keeps you awake until two in the morning.

The second kind earns a standing ovation.

Unfortunately, mine managed to do both.

It happened during Monday's assembly.

Our principal stepped onto the stage, adjusted the microphone, and smiled.

"We will now present the award for Academic Excellence."

Everyone clapped politely.

I clapped too.

Then he called my name.

"Liam Carter."

For a full three seconds, I sat there looking around like someone else would stand up.

Nobody did.

My best friend elbowed me.

"Dude," he whispered. "That's you."

I stood.

My classmates cheered.

Someone wolf-whistled.

By the time I reached the stage, I had convinced myself that maybe I had accidentally become intelligent overnight.

The principal shook my hand.

"Congratulations."

"Thank you, sir."

A teacher handed me a certificate.

Another handed me a trophy.

There were photographs.

Several photographs.

Someone even shouted, "Speech!"

Now, a sensible person would've said, "I think you've got the wrong Liam."

I am not a sensible person.

Instead, I cleared my throat.

"I'd like to thank... education."

The hall erupted with applause.

Encouraged, I continued.

"And... pencils."

More applause.

"My calculator."

Students were laughing now.

"My Wi-Fi for surviving exam season."

Even the teachers were trying not to smile.

I was halfway through thanking my alarm clock for "believing in me" when the back doors of the hall burst open.

Another boy sprinted inside.

He was panting so hard he could barely speak.

"Sir!" he gasped.

"I'm... Liam... Carter!"

The hall fell silent.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

I looked at the certificate in my hands.

Then at the boy.

Then back at the certificate.

There were, apparently, two Liam Carters in Year Eleven.

One had straight A's.

The other had once failed an open-book test because he forgot to open the book.

Guess which one was standing on the stage.

The principal looked at me.

Then at the other Liam.

Then back at me.

"...You've been accepting this award for the last two minutes."

"I noticed," I admitted.

"You gave a speech."

"...I did."

"You thanked your Wi-Fi."

"I stand by that one."

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then the principal sighed, took the trophy from my hands, and passed it to the actual winner.

The entire hall burst into laughter.

Even the other Liam was laughing so hard he nearly dropped his certificate.

I returned to my seat to thunderous applause.

Not because I'd won anything.

Because I'd somehow turned Academic Excellence into a comedy show.

For the rest of the year, teachers introduced me as, "The Liam who thanked his calculator."

At graduation, the principal shook my hand again.

"Congratulations," he said.

"For what?"

He smiled.

"Best acceptance speech we've ever had."
