Prologue — The Impossible

I grew up reading science fiction.

Like millions of other readers, I was fascinated by the possibility that intelligent life might exist somewhere beyond Earth. I eagerly consumed stories of distant civilizations, interstellar journeys, and first contact. But there was one subject I never took seriously.

Alien abductions.

The idea seemed fundamentally irrational. Why would a civilization capable of crossing the unimaginable distances between stars travel all that way simply to remove ordinary people from their bedrooms? The accounts were always strangely similar, yet somehow less convincing because of it. I placed them in the same category as ghost stories, urban legends, and other mysteries that were more entertaining than believable.

For most of my life, that opinion never changed.

Then, one Tuesday morning in October 2008, I woke up with the unsettling realization that something was wrong.

The night before was an absolute blank—not the ordinary absence of memory that accompanies sleep, but something far more disturbing.

I couldn't remember anything after going to bed.

Not fragments.

Not dreams.

Nothing.

It wasn't ordinary forgetfulness.

It was absence.

An entire section of time had simply vanished.

At first, I searched for rational explanations. Perhaps I had been sick. Perhaps exhaustion had produced an unusually deep sleep. Perhaps the missing hours would return on their own.

They didn't.

Instead, something far stranger happened.

Exactly one month later, while washing dishes in my kitchen, the first memory returned.

For a long time, I kept these experiences to myself.

I have spent countless hours considering every possibility I could find. Sleep paralysis. False memories. Neurological disorders. Vivid dreams. Trauma. The remarkable ability of the human brain to construct narratives from incomplete information.

Perhaps one of those explanations is correct.

Perhaps none of them are.

I no longer claim certainty.

What follows is simply the most faithful account I can offer of the memories that eventually returned to me.

I have not written these pages to persuade anyone.

Initial Contact

The last memory to return was the first event that occurred.

I knew that immediately.

My bedroom was exactly as I had left it before going to bed. Every familiar object was in its proper place.

Except I wasn't alone.

At the foot of my bed stood several small figures.

Three.

Perhaps four.

They were short, with slender bodies and disproportionately large heads. Their eyes were immense—dark, glossy, almost entirely black. They neither spoke nor moved. They simply watched me with an unsettling patience that suggested they had been standing there long before I opened my eyes.

Then I noticed the smell.

It was overpowering.

A sharp, penetrating odor of ammonia unlike anything I had encountered before or since. It seemed to emanate directly from the beings themselves, saturating the room so completely that I instinctively turned my face away.

Before I could react, a powerful sensation spread through my body.

It began somewhere deep in my spine.

Then it radiated outward through my arms, my legs, my fingertips.

Every nerve seemed to vibrate at once.

It wasn't pain.

It was electricity.

Not the brief shock of touching a live wire, but a continuous current humming through every part of me.

I tried to sit up.

Nothing happened.

My body no longer responded.

The paralysis was absolute.

Oddly enough, I don't remember feeling immediate terror.

At first, I was simply trying to understand what I was experiencing.

Then the mattress disappeared beneath me.

Transit Point

The second memory returned almost immediately after the first.

Once the beginning had found its place, what followed seemed to unfold naturally.

I wasn't taken aboard immediately.

Instead, I found myself descending toward the small park three blocks from my house.

A narrow hiking trail wound through the hillside overlooking the neighborhood. I had walked it countless times during the day, but at that hour it seemed to belong to another world. The trees were little more than black silhouettes against the night sky, and the scattered lights of the city below appeared impossibly distant.

My feet touched the ground so gently that I barely felt the landing.

For the first time since waking in my bedroom, I was standing on solid earth.

I looked around, trying to make sense of what was happening to me.

Nothing moved.

The figures remained nearby. They stood several feet away without acknowledging me, their large black eyes fixed on nothing in particular. Whether they were communicating telepathically among themselves, I had no way of knowing. If they were, they gave no indication of it.

They simply waited with remarkable calm, showing neither urgency nor curiosity.

This seemed completely natural to them, as though it were simply another step in a routine repeated countless times before.

Only then did I notice something far more immediate.

I was cold.

Very cold.

I was wearing nothing but a thin T-shirt and a pair of boxer shorts. Up in the hills, the night air was considerably colder than down in the neighborhood. Within moments, I began to shiver violently.

Oddly enough, I wasn't frightened.

Looking back, that surprises me more than anything else.

I should have been terrified.

Instead, my overwhelming concern at that moment was how bitterly cold I felt.

Perhaps shock had dulled my emotions.

Perhaps whatever had happened inside my bedroom had left me strangely detached from the situation.

I don't know.

I only remember standing there, my arms folded tightly across my chest, trying to preserve what little warmth I had while the figures waited without the slightest sign of impatience.

One thought drifted into my mind.

They looked like people waiting for a bus.

To this day, I have no idea how—or even if—they boarded whatever was waiting above us.

The colors surrounded me.

The cold disappeared.

Warmth took its place.

Everything dissolved into white.

The Cylinder

The third fragment surfaced without warning.

Unlike the previous ones, this one arrived fully formed.

Warmth.

That was the first sensation.

Not heat, but a dense, enveloping warmth pressing gently against every part of my body.

For a brief instant, before consciousness fully returned, I had the curious impression that I was suspended in perfect weightlessness.

Then I inhaled.

My eyes opened.

I wasn't breathing air.

A thick, greenish liquid filled my lungs.

Instinctively, I tried to cough.

Nothing happened.

There was no choking.

No burning.

No desperate struggle for oxygen.

My body accepted the liquid as naturally as though it had always been meant to breathe it.

That realization frightened me more than the liquid itself.

I tried to understand what I was seeing.

I was suspended inside a narrow glass cylinder, barely wider than my body.

Soft yellow-green light filtered through the fluid, turning everything beyond the transparent walls into blurred shapes.

The liquid was far thicker than water, dense and viscous, clinging to my skin and eyelashes with every movement.

Then I tried to move.

Nothing.

Not my arms.

Not my legs.

Not even my head.

Only my eyes obeyed me.

Panic arrived all at once.

I was completely awake.

Completely conscious.

And completely paralyzed.

I have no idea how long I remained that way.

Time had become meaningless.

I remember staring through the curved glass, trying to understand any of it.

The only things I could perceive clearly were the unusual glow surrounding me and the sensation of being suspended inside something completely unfamiliar.

Then the memories of my bedroom...

came crashing together.

This wasn't a dream.

I threw every ounce of willpower I possessed against the paralysis.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Then...

One finger moved.

So slightly that I almost believed I had imagined it.

I focused everything on that single movement.

Another finger.

My wrist.

A shoulder.

It felt less like regaining control than forcing a machine to start after a long period of dormancy.

Every muscle resisted.

Until suddenly...

Everything returned.

My arms jerked violently upward.

My legs kicked.

The liquid churned around me as I hurled myself toward the wall of the cylinder.

I expected solid glass.

Instead, the surface yielded beneath the force of my body.

Not by breaking.

By giving way.

Like passing through an invisible membrane.

I burst out of the cylinder.

The change was instantaneous.

My lungs convulsed.

The warm liquid that had sustained me only seconds before suddenly became intolerable. Violent spasms seized my chest as I collapsed onto the cold metal floor, coughing uncontrollably while streams of green fluid poured from my mouth and nose.

The first breath of air burned.

Every muscle in my body trembled.

For several long seconds, I remained on my hands and knees, coughing and gasping, unable to understand where I was.

Slowly, my breathing began to return.

Only then did I truly see my surroundings.

Dark metal walls.

Steam drifting lazily through the air.

Massive structural columns disappearing into the distance.

The place was enormous.

Far larger than anything I could have imagined.

The floor beneath me was wet.

A slippery gelatinous film still coated my skin, reflecting the yellow-green light filling the chamber.

The air was warm.

Heavy with moisture.

Not oppressively hot, but saturated with humidity, like the inside of a vast tropical greenhouse sealed away from the outside world.

A strange, unpleasant odor filled the air.

I stood unsteadily.

It was only then that I realized I was naked.

As I turned toward the cylinder I had escaped, another realization followed.

It wasn't alone.

Rows of identical glass cylinders stretched along both sides of a wide passageway.

They were arranged horizontally, resting on the floor in long rows that disappeared into the darkness.

Most of them were completely dark.

Only a few glowed softly from within, casting the same yellow-green light that filled the chamber.

Inside the illuminated cylinders floated human figures.

Men.

Women.

Young.

Old.

All motionless beneath the glowing fluid.

I stared.

Then I moved closer to the first illuminated cylinder.

Inside was a man.

He lay motionless at the bottom, exactly as I had been only moments before.

I looked into the next one.

A young woman.

At first, she appeared equally lifeless.

Then her eyes opened.

Only her eyes.

The only movement she could make.

In that instant, something inside me changed.

Until that moment, I had been afraid for myself.

Now I understood.

This was happening to others.

Whatever composure I still possessed vanished.

I ran.

I screamed until my throat burned.

Not words.

Only sound.

The chamber seemed endless.

Dark metal walls disappeared behind drifting clouds of steam. The wet floor slid beneath my bare feet as I stumbled between endless rows of cylinders.

Then I saw it.

A rectangle of brilliant white light at the end of a long passageway.

An exit.

I ran toward it with everything I had left.

The light grew larger.

Closer.

Almost within reach.

Then...

Two figures stepped out from the brightness.

They were taller than the others.

Much taller.

Their movements were calm.

Unhurried.

As though they had known exactly where I was going.

One of them stepped forward.

His head was large and unnerving.

His eyes were round and yellowish, unblinking and lidless.

Yet there was nothing threatening in the way he moved.

He simply raised one hand.

Long, slender fingers reached toward my shoulder.

I tried to avoid him.

I never had the chance.

The instant his hand touched me...

The Examination

The fourth fragment emerged in pieces before finally assembling itself into a single uninterrupted sequence.

More than any other, this one resisted being remembered.

Consciousness returned slowly.

The first thing I felt was cold.

Not the cold of night air, but the chill of metal beneath my back.

I opened my eyes.

Bright white light flooded the room, making it impossible to judge its size. Smooth metallic surfaces reflected the illumination without revealing its source. Everything appeared clean, orderly, almost clinical.

I was lying on a narrow table.

I tried to sit up.

There were three beings in the room.

The two smaller ones moved around the table with the same mechanical precision I had seen before. Every movement seemed perfectly coordinated, as though each already knew what the other would do before doing it.

They never hesitated.

They never looked at one another.

They simply worked.

The third stood several feet away.

Watching.

He was considerably taller than the others.

His head was disproportionately large compared to his body, yet somehow perfectly suited to his frame. His skin wasn't gray. It had a muted brown tone, smooth and almost featureless beneath the harsh lighting.

Then I looked into his eyes.

Large.

Round.

A deep amber-orange, polished like stone.

They never blinked.

Not once.

There was no hostility in them.

No compassion either.

Only complete attention.

It was the expression of someone observing a familiar procedure.

Nothing about him suggested curiosity.

Whatever was happening on that table...

he had witnessed it countless times before.

The examination was already underway when consciousness returned.

I cannot reconstruct every procedure they performed.

Some memories remain incomplete.

Others, thankfully, have faded.

But several moments remain perfectly clear.

To my astonishment, I could still see.

Before I had time to process what had happened, another instrument appeared.

It resembled a long, narrow strip of transparent glass.

One of the smaller beings guided it toward my face.

Into my right nostril.

The sensation was immediate.

Sharp.

It traveled far deeper than seemed anatomically possible, sending a burst of pain through the center of my skull.

I wanted to cry out.

I couldn't.

Every muscle remained perfectly still.

The examination continued.

I remember sensations lower on my body.

Pressure.

Movement.

The unmistakable awareness that procedures were being performed beyond my field of vision.

His face came within inches of mine.

Except it wasn't mine.

The words were unmistakable.

Yet the only being who acknowledged my fear did so with remarkable composure.

What remained with me was not fear.

It was understanding.

When I became aware of my surroundings again, I was no longer lying on a table.

Something connected the chair to me.

I don't know what.

I couldn't see any wires.

Only the unmistakable sensation that my mind itself had become part of whatever system surrounded me.

Directly in front of me appeared a succession of images.

At first, I assumed they were photographs.

Then they began changing.

Faster.

The speed became overwhelming.

"I can't keep up," I remember saying.

Yet something about the entire sequence produced no despair.

Only understanding.

I cannot explain why.

When the transmission finally ended, the sensation vanished almost immediately.

Whatever insight I had possessed disappeared with it.

Love.

Grief.

Hope.

Fear.

An invisible world that disappears when we do.

The sixth fragment emerged unexpectedly, detached from all the others.

Even now, I cannot say where it belongs in the sequence of events.

It simply exists, complete in itself.

One moment I was inside the spacecraft.

The next...

I was standing beneath a blazing sun.

The transition was so abrupt that I instinctively looked around, expecting to find walls, machinery, or the beings who had accompanied me throughout the experience.

There was nothing.

Only desert.

Sand stretched to every horizon beneath an impossibly blue sky. The sunlight was so intense that it flattened the landscape, leaving almost no shadows. Heat shimmered above the ground, blurring the distance until earth and sky seemed to merge.

I looked down.

I was stripped of everything familiar.

No clothing.

No possessions.

No connection to the world I knew.

The realization carried an unexpected weight.

It wasn't embarrassment.

There was no one to impress, no one to judge me.

It was something deeper.

A profound sense of vulnerability.

Without clothing, without possessions, without even knowing where I was, every familiar layer of identity had been removed.

Neither did the shadows.

Everything remained suspended in a strange, timeless stillness.

Then...

without warning...

the memory ended.

No transition.

No awakening.

No return.

For years I searched for some meaning in that desert.

Was it another medical procedure?

A psychological evaluation?

A simulation?

A place that actually existed somewhere beyond Earth?

I still don't know.
