Chapter One

The Rescue

Rain poured endlessly over Blackstone City.

Streetlights reflected across the wet pavement, turning the deserted road into a river of orange light.

Inside a black SUV, twenty-two-year-old Sara Ashford sat quietly beside the driver.

She wasn't listening to the conversation around her.

She was staring out the window...

Thinking about home.

She had spent months attending political events because of her father's position, smiling for cameras she hated and shaking hands with people she didn't trust.

Tonight was supposed to be over.

She just wanted to sleep.

She never reached home.

A loud explosion shattered the silence.

BOOM!

The road in front of the convoy erupted into flames.

The lead vehicle flipped over.

The second crashed into a concrete barrier.

Sara screamed as her SUV spun across the road.

Glass exploded everywhere.

The bodyguard beside her reached for his pistol.

Gun fire rained from both sides of the highway.

Masked gunmen emerged from the darkness.

Automatic rifles.

Military equipment.

Professional.

This wasn't a robbery.

It was an execution.

One bodyguard shouted,

"Protect Miss Sara!"

Another answered,

"We're surrounded!"

Within seconds...

Both were dead.

Sara crawled toward the broken window.

Her breathing became faster.

Her hands trembled.

"No..."

Footsteps approached.

One masked man aimed his rifle directly at her.

He smiled beneath his mask.

"It's over."

Before he could pull the trigger—

BANG!

The attacker collapsed instantly.

A single bullet.

Straight through the shoulder.

Another shot.

Another attacker fell.

The remaining mercenaries immediately turned.

Someone was shooting back.

Across the highway...

A woman calmly stepped out of the darkness.

Black tactical jacket.

Combat boots.

Dark jeans.

A pistol in each hand.

Her expression remained completely calm despite the chaos surrounding her.

She looked almost... bored.

One mercenary whispered,

"...It's her."

Another slowly stepped backwards.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

The first man swallowed.

"Officer Hope."

Hope Park looked over the battlefield once.

She counted the enemies.

Twelve.

She smiled slightly.

"Could've been worse."

She moved.

Not fast.

Efficient.

Every movement had purpose.

She fired twice.

Two attackers dropped.

Another charged with a knife.

Hope sidestepped.

Caught his wrist.

Twisted.

The knife clattered across the road.

She drove her elbow into his ribs before sweeping his legs out from under him.

He hit the asphalt unconscious.

Another attacker fired from behind a vehicle.

Hope rolled behind the wreckage.

Waited.

The instant he reloaded...

She leaned out.

One shot.

His rifle flew from his hands.

Sara could barely believe what she was seeing.

One woman...

Against an entire assassination squad.

And she wasn't panicking.

She wasn't even rushing.

She fought like she'd done this a hundred times before.

Hope reached Sara's overturned SUV.

She opened the damaged door.

"You hurt?"

Sara stared.

"...What?"

Hope sighed.

"I asked if you're hurt."

Sara shook her head.

"I..."

"I don't think so."

Hope nodded.

"Good."

"We're leaving."

Sara blinked.

"My bodyguards—"

Hope interrupted gently.

"They're gone."

Sara looked back.

Silence.

The reality finally hit.

Tears filled her eyes.

Hope noticed...

But said nothing.

Instead...

She removed her own jacket and wrapped it around Sara's shoulders.

"Come on."

The remaining attackers regrouped.

One shouted,

"Don't let them escape!"

Hope glanced around.

Three vehicles blocked the road.

Too slow.

She spotted a police motorcycle lying beside the crash.

Perfect.

She helped Sara onto the back.

Sara immediately grabbed Hope's jacket.

Hope started the engine.

"You ever been on one of these?"

Sara shook her head.

"No."

Hope smirked.

"Try not to scream."

The motorcycle roared forward.

Bullets shattered the road behind them.

Hope leaned hard into the first corner.

Sara instinctively wrapped both arms around Hope's waist.

Hope noticed.

She smiled.

"Good idea."

Several minutes later...

The city disappeared behind them.

Only forest surrounded the road now.

Sara's heartbeat slowly returned to normal.

Hope finally spoke.

"They weren't ordinary criminals."

Sara nodded.

"I know."

"They wanted me dead."

Hope kept her eyes on the road.

"No."

"They wanted something much bigger."

Sara frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Hope answered quietly.

"If strangers planned this..."

"I'd already know who hired them."

She looked at Sara through the mirror.

"They knew your route."

"They knew your security."

"They knew the exact timing."

A long silence followed.

Hope finally said the words Sara had been afraid to hear.

"Someone close to you..."

"...wanted tonight to happen."

Sara felt the blood drain from her face.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Hope looked ahead.

"I hope you're right."

Miles away...

Inside a luxury office...

A man watched the burning convoy on a television screen.

One of his mercenaries entered.

"Sir..."

"She escaped."

The man remained silent.

Then asked only one question.

"Who took her?"

The mercenary hesitated.

"...Officer Hope Park

For the first time...

The man smiled.

"So..."

"The legend is real."

He switched off the television.

"Interesting."

The motorcycle disappeared into the mountains.

Neither woman realized...

That one rescue...

Had just changed both of their lives forever.
