The transition was jarring. One moment, they were breathing salty air; the next, they were stepping through a veil of liquid light.
Silica and Marley had spent the carriage ride crafting "Hydro-Spheres"—glowing blue orbs that attached to each person’s throat, allowing them to breathe underwater and speak as clearly as if they were on land.
"Whoa," Marek gasped, his voice sounding slightly melodic through the magic. He looked down at his feet. Instead of sinking, he was floating weightlessly. "I feel like a bubble! Look at me, I’m a majestic sea-prince!"
"You look like a drowning cat, Marek," Elsa deadpanned, effortlessly gliding past him with her ice-magic acting as a rudder.
The City of Coral
As they descended, the Underwater Kingdom of Aquillaria came into view. It was a sprawling metropolis of iridescent coral and bioluminescent glass. Giant jellyfish acted as streetlamps, and schools of colorful fish darted between the spires like birds.
But as they got closer, the beauty faded. A jagged, black tear—the Tidal Rift—scarred the seafloor. From it, a thick, oily purple smoke was oozing, turning the nearby coral into rotting, grey husks.
"That's the corrupted mana," Robert noted, his shadow-magic reacting to the rift. "It feels like the Nameless Council's handiwork, but adapted for the deep."
The Mermaid Encounter
As they reached the gates of the palace, a group of Siren Sentinels intercepted them. Their leader was a mermaid with scales the color of rubies and hair that flowed like living seaweed.
"Halt, surface-dwellers," she commanded, her voice vibrating through the water. "The King is in mourning. The Rift has taken his son’s voice."
Marek immediately smoothed his wet hair and struck a "heroic" pose. "Fear not, fair lady of the foam! I am Marek, the... uh... Most Radiant. We are here to fix your Rift and perhaps share a kelp-shake later?"
The Sentinel stared at him, her expression unchanging. "Is the blonde one mentally compromised?" she asked Jessica.
"Daily," Jessica sighed, checking her staff's water-resistance. "Ignore him. We're the heroes the King summoned."
The Mission: The Heart of the Rift
They were ushered into the throne room, where King Tritonus looked weary. He explained that the Rift wasn't just a hole; it was a doorway to a Sunken Archive where an ancient artifact, the Pearl of Tides, had been corrupted.
"If the Pearl isn't cleansed," the King warned, "the entire ocean will turn into a poisonous soup. But the Archive is guarded by the Kraken of Shadows."
Marin stepped forward, her hand on her sword. "We’ve fought shadow-beasts on land. We can fight them here. Robert, can your shadows merge with the water?"
Robert closed his eyes, testing the connection. "It’s different... heavier. But yes. I can cloak us."
The Plunge
The team swam toward the dark abyss of the Archive. The pressure increased, and the light from Aquillaria faded behind them.
"Stay close," Malric ordered, using his earth-magic to pull minerals from the seafloor to create a protective "submarine" shell of rock around the group. "If the Kraken hits us, the pressure alone will crush us."
Suddenly, a massive, glowing eye—the size of a carriage—opened in the darkness below them.
"I think the Kraken found us first," Marley whispered, her glow-lights flickering in fear.
