I want to preface this by saying that most of what I see is probably just limited to the internet, but I still want to comment on this anyway for all the fellow casuals. I consider myself and many of my friends to be some of the most casual enjoyers of things I know even for stuff we really love(d). What I mean by 'casual' is simply that we simply enjoy what we enjoy whether it be a show, book or game, we enjoy it and want to have fun with it. We don't have the time to devote several hours a day to truly become extremely good at what we do and don't really care about what characters we play so long as we're having fun.
However, there is a certain part of the internet that hates us for being casuals especially when it comes to games. Yes, these people have always existed, but I can't help but feel that they're out in full force these past years. We used to laugh and point at the no-life's who do nothing but play one specific game or hardcore enjoy something, but it feels like they've become bigger and louder to the point where they will complain about the casual community of whatever they like.
I've literally seen someone complaining about the "hypercasual" group of gamers and then say that they don't want to get better at the game just because they don't want to play a meta, hyper-competitive style and are just playing to try to have fun. People agreed and even pushed it further to say that casuals don't want to get better at anything in their lives which makes them lesser people. As if spending hours and hours a day getting good at a video game is somehow better than going out into life and learning a skill or doing well at a job. The fact that these people are louder now really doesn't help people's opinions.
I've already touched on shows and movies for this in a previous part, but I do feel like it's gotten worse since then. Everything either has to be amazing or it's absolute trash...nothing can be in between anymore and if you say you don't like it, even if you don't say it's bad, it's the same to some people as saying it's the worst thing ever. I've made my opinions on many shows people like, not hating them but acknowledging that they're not that good, and people are more than willing to jump down my throat with excuses and tell me that I'm stupid for not liking something as much as they do. I love Hollow Knight, but I understand why people don't and that is their prerogative. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it or Dark Souls, and yet I am here as an avid fan who still understands why people don't want to give them a try.67Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡPCy9Csxqxp
The point is that casuals are still the bulk of the fans. New people become casuals first but if the hardcore people keep pushing them away, it's going to kill the fandom and whatever it is they enjoy. The community will stagnate and be forgotten since people won't see it as worth it to pick up whatever show or game because of the association of the community. Online games almost aren't worth it unless you have a dedicated group of friends to play with and just mess around with because of how communities have gotten a lot more toxic against themselves, really.67Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡIxHniSjidw
