Mateo wiped sweat from his forehead.
“This place is trying to kill me,” he muttered.
Lucas was fixing a wooden gate nearby.
“You’ve only been here three days,” he said.

Lucas closed the gate and looked toward the hills.
“There’s a river past the trees.”
Mateo raised an eyebrow.

The path through the trees was narrow.
Leaves rustled above them.
The air smelled cooler.

“Please tell me there aren’t snakes here.”

Mateo stopped walking.

The river appeared between the trees.
Clear water moving slowly over smooth stones.

“You’ve been hiding this from me?”
Lucas stepped onto a rock near the edge.
“I didn’t hide it.”
Mateo kicked off his shoes.
The cold water touched his feet.
He gasped.
“Okay… that’s actually amazing.”
Lucas sat on the riverbank.
Mateo splashed water on his face.
The heat disappeared instantly.
He laughed quietly.
Lucas watched him.

Mateo turned around.
“You’re just going to sit there?”
Lucas shrugged.
Mateo splashed water toward him.
Lucas jumped back slightly.

Lucas rolled his eyes.
But he stepped closer to the river.
He washed his hands in the water.
Mateo watched him.
Lucas’s hair was messy from the wind.
His shirt clung slightly from the heat of the day.
Mateo quickly looked away.
Something about the moment felt strange.

Lucas noticed the silence.
“What?”
Mateo shook his head.
“Nothing.”
He sat beside him on the rocks.
The river flowed quietly.
Birds moved through the trees.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Mateo looked at the sky through the leaves.
“This place isn’t as terrible as I thought,” he admitted.
Lucas glanced at him.
“That’s the nicest thing you’ve said about the farm.”
Mateo smiled a little.
“Don’t get used to it.”
Lucas smiled faintly.
The river continued flowing.
And somewhere between the water, the heat, and the quiet forest…
The distance between them became smaller.
Still not love.
