Lucas stepped closer to guide him.
“Like this,” he said softly.
He placed Mateo’s hand on the horse’s side.
Slow movements.
Gentle strokes.
The horse relaxed.
Mateo focused carefully.
For a moment, their shoulders touched.
Neither of them moved.
The barn was quiet.
Only the sound of brushing.
And the soft breathing of the horse.
Mateo glanced sideways.
Lucas looked peaceful here.
Different from the serious boy he had met on the first day.
“Why don’t you ever leave this place?” Mateo asked.
Lucas stopped brushing.
He looked toward the open barn doors.
The fields stretched endlessly outside.
“My father needs help,” he said quietly.
Mateo studied his face.
“You ever want something else?”
Lucas didn’t answer.
Instead, he handed Mateo a small carrot.
“For the horse.”
Mateo held it out.
The horse ate it eagerly.
Mateo laughed.
A real laugh this time.
Lucas smiled faintly.
The moment felt simple.
