This is more for a long running series and the like, but I feel there's a point to be made here. Alternate timelines and parallel universes can be fun to do and see, but can lead to a few things that get tired real quick and can also lead to what some might consider lazy writing. The concept of parallel universes does state that there are an infinite number of universes where things are different, but it does not describe the magnitude of the change. Certain words exchanged for others, different outcomes of historical events, a blade of grass leaning to the left rather than the right, etc. The issue I want to warn about is using alternate timelines/universes as an excuse to do whatever without having any real consequences.
Since there are universes where pretty much nothing is different, it can be easy to just use those as an excuse to excuse away things like the destruction of a civilization or the death of a prominent character. However, doing this even just once can immediately ruin any stakes the readers might have because we can just jump to another universe where everything is basically the same and keep going from there. Not saying that this happens to everyone and everything that uses alternate timelines/universes, I myself brough in alternate characters of my own one time, but it could be easy to fall into this trap even if you don't mean to. This could be fixed, possibly, by having a 'prime universe' or 'true timeline' (I sort of went with the latter) but even then the same issue could be brought up in there being less stakes. I say that this is more avoidable with timelines since they require moments only rather than it possible to be their own thing just with subtle differences like a character fulfilling their revenge plot or not, or someone else dying in the place of a notable figure, but I'm not going to swear on that.
Regardless, have alternate timelines and universes but be careful with how you use them. You could be eliminating any stakes you have with them whether by design or by accident.
Have a day
