If you've been around any sort of the Pokémon community, you've probably at least heard or seen people complaining about the Pokémon Company's favoritism for Charizard. I really hate it, not for love of Charizard, but because the fans are indirectly responsible due to their own extreme love of Charizard even if it wasn't the best overall pick for the first gen or gen 3 remakes for the story. There are a lot of things that seemed just arbitrarily given to Charizard, I will admit, but what people don't realize is that the fans are doing the same thing they now hate about Charizard to Greninja.174Please respect copyright.PENANAvbwU84Yyyl
Greninja should be one of my favorite Pokémon ever due to it being a water and dark type, two of my favorite types, but I just really can't bring myself to like it enough. It's not really that great for gen 6, it's signature move fits its ninja design but feels a little like they worked on that one last as it's just a water type multi-attack similar to rock blast or fury swipes. I just can't really find a whole lot to really like about Greninja and think he's just kinda ok outside of his hidden ability which allowed it to change type based on the move it used. Greninja is just alright although I will admit he was kinda fun to play in Smash.174Please respect copyright.PENANAHqV8r5Al3e
With Legends ZA, the Kalos starters got mega evolutions two of which expanded on the ideas they were based on with Delphox getting darker fur, a broomstick to ride and floating wands to become more like a powerful mage while Chesnaught's armor grew more bulky and detailed to evoke the heavy armor that fighters and paladins tend to wear to tank hits. Greninja, meanwhile, turned into an approximation of its shiny, turned upside down, and is stood on a spinning water shuriken...and people say this one is amazing. The others build on the ideas of the witch and warrior they represent and Greninja does nothing to add to the ninja it's supposed to be save for the giant spinning shuriken.174Please respect copyright.PENANAAlFxzDVYH5
One thing that I wonder is if Greninja would have this much love if Ash Greninja didn't exist. Ash Greninja is a pseudo mega evolution that was introduced in the anime that occurs when Ash and Greninja's bond reaches a peak moment. This was brought over with an ability that activates upon defeating an opponent's Pokémon and boosting the stats of Greninja. The design evokes Ash's cap and hair while adding a water shuriken on Greninja's back but otherwise just makes it look normal. The lore behind it is that Ash's bond with Greninja allowed it to bring out it's full potential...and yet we have never seen this happen with any other Pokémon in the history of ever. Why is it that this has only ever happened with this one specific kid and this Pokémon, when he has other Pokémon he has bonded even more with, except for the fact that he is the main character? It just doesn't sit right with me that they did this once and never did it again, and I think it's the main reason why people have this insane love for Greninja.174Please respect copyright.PENANAoYR3pN53uG
Any opinion pole that involves Greninja will show that Greninja is winning by a substantial lead even if the other options are all generally better. It doesn't help the idea that people only like Greninja because of Ash Greninja or Smash Bros when they don't seem to be able to break away from it to give a different answer, even admitting it in comments. Then, these same people hate how the Pokémon company loves Charizard where the only thing they aren't doing is making games to give Greninja a spotlight. Greninja isn't a bad Pokémon, but I don't think it deserves all the hype it gets and is severely overrated.
Have a day...
