Tedious tasks never bothered Damien. He is a hardworking boy, who finds joy in helping others. But rarely does he volunteer to carry these tasks. This week was a clear change of rhythm around the farm. Damien has been working tirelessly all day long. At dawn, he tended to the soil and fetched fodder which fed the cattle. Harvest ended recentely. Now it's time to replenship the soil. Wearing a handkerchief over his face as mask, Damien shoveled cow dung into a large wheelbarrow. Once the weight beared hefty, he pushed ahead towards the field where last year's harvest had been collected. Afterwards, he scattered the fertilizer across the garden bed. 135Please respect copyright.PENANA5b2kawvLU5

The river washed away the dirt on his body, then his mother scrubbed away the stench. She sat him for breakfast next to her two younger children, and fed them their fill of potatoes, eggs, meat and bread. At the afternoon, Damien helped with laundry. He brushed the fabric on his siblings' clothes, rinsed them repeatedly and hung the wet garments outside in a file. Sometimes he would mix soap incorrectly, or misplace the dry clothes with the wet. Agatha found her son's clumsy work amusing. She was more than happy to rectify his mistakes and help make a learning experience out of his labours. At the evening, he would set the table for dinner. Food is prepared without his help. Agatha could never let him get close to the stove. At night, Damien spent most of his night in his room. It's quite chilly this time of the year. Mr. Ensho had already sent him the book in braille. The boy read every now and then. Some concepts evaded his understanding, but he persisted out of sheer curiosity. This has been his routine for the past days. 135Please respect copyright.PENANAL0qbwhcLbR

Tomorrow however, permission to leave the house was granted. Agatha is terrified for her son. She worries whenever she can't see him. But she knows she mustn't cage her boy from the world, and she writhes in his struggles to learn without the supervision of Mr. Ensho. Therefore, she allowed him to go to town for as long as Halo accompanied him. This was a non-negotiable. He must never be alone. She trusts her son's friend wholeheartidly, and treats him like her own. So his presence alleviates some of her anxiety.135Please respect copyright.PENANAO2uVGWfHyb

By early morning, Halo had reached the farm, wearing a bag over his shoulder. With a chest full of air, he shouted imitating a rooster. Loud crows surprised the whole family at the breakfast table. Damien got up immediately with a reddened face. He walked angrily to the door and cried out "Halo, quit it! We don't have any chickens!"135Please respect copyright.PENANAGT0AbtFu9K
Halo squealed in a sad tone then walked to meet his friend. Placing his hand on Damien's shoulder, he looked down seriously and said "be-bawk?" 135Please respect copyright.PENANAizAnMJZIv3
Damien shook him off and walked away slamming the floor "You're an idiot. I'm going to grab my things." 135Please respect copyright.PENANApIAI6GbHUC
Halo squealed happily. As he waited at the door whistling, Agatha came up to greet him : "Good morning, Halo. Why don't you come and have something to eat?" 135Please respect copyright.PENANACERf377DI7
Halo panicked and turned around then said "Oh no mam, thank you! My stomach's full."135Please respect copyright.PENANAVqsSKQj3gn
"Are you okay?" Said Agatha with concern. She reached in to check on the boy, but before she touched him Damien had returned. 135Please respect copyright.PENANAtenrMrP5kZ

"Wow this must have cost a fortune." said Halo while inspecting the family road as the two boys make their way to the town.135Please respect copyright.PENANAWRgkN5PGAM
"How much would you say?"135Please respect copyright.PENANAdXrCLwnbaE
"Hmm, looking at your farm size, I would say 5 years' worth of crops for the contributory ends. Though I'm not sure about the admitory ends."135Please respect copyright.PENANAVEIgf2k9PV
"Really? Dad never talks about adult stuff, so I honestly don't know." says Damien in surprise.135Please respect copyright.PENANAyOPzQ3rN6B
"My guess is that he contacted Llafjo's family to provision the rocks, and some small family from the blacksmiths' hub for the construction." Says halo while rubbing his chin inquisitevely.135Please respect copyright.PENANAoypvWz9xpn

Property law in Crania is based on exchange between families. Noone really 'owns' anything in Crania. Families hold property to their name for a number of years, then release them.135Please respect copyright.PENANAcvgvT2aig7
135Please respect copyright.PENANABzRNQHjAhR
To acquire a property or launch a project, within communal spaces in Crania, firstly the acquisitive drafts a contract. In this contract, you must specify the details of your intended purchase, plans of transformation and access permissions.135Please respect copyright.PENANARyDQAvIQJK

In this contract, the location was clarified as a 2 meter wide route that cuts through the Bra'mi forest. The plans of transformation were detailed as road construction. Lastly the access was selected as family exclusive.135Please respect copyright.PENANANMbNoI9nW3
This contract is then sent to a resident family of Crania, besides your own of course. The recipient family revises the contract and makes a tax demand. A yearly tax is requested for the duration of holding. This tax is usually decided on meeting between the two families, so to allow negotiations, and takes form in commodity exchange. Damien's family offers fresh pumpkin, dried pumpkin seeds, pasture produce and hay. The recipient family would request a cut from this list of produces and the holding family negotiates a fare cut. Once a deal is made, the contract is redrafted to include the recipient family tax expectations. The contract is once again sent to another family and the process repeats. Usually, the first family sets the tone of exchange value, since the following demands take reservations from overwhelming the first. The acquisitive aims to collect as many contributors as they could possibly afford.
Damien's family circulated the road's contract around 3 families, the Llafjo's, Gyhnen's and Cerbol's. This guaranteed all the necessary material and equipment being provisioned, as well as new trade relations that propel the local economy.
At that point, The contract has 3 contributors. It is then sent to the city administration; Based on the value of contributions, a selected official checks the feasibility and contract requirements. The city also offers information resoursces, in return for future commitments (such as asking the family later on to build a dam, or distribute pumpkins to the city on cold winters). If the contributions are too little, the official can resend the contract to the acquisitive requesting further generosity. In that case, the acquisitive may arrange for a budget calculation appeal, where a bureau official visits the farm and assesses the available resources as well the standing deals with other families. Based on the family's situation, they may permit the contract with minimal support despite the low contributions. but if the contributions are satisfactory, support is offered and the property is admitted. Every year, the holder pays homage to each contributor and the city assists through maintenance and construction with the holder. Contributors may send in assistance as well, but the holder usually discusses this with the family beforehand. Once the contract expires, it can be renewed with modifications adjusting to the new period, or the holder may release the property and the city would take care of the rest. 135Please respect copyright.PENANANHDtQXDL9L

This structure incentivizes holders to build commercial relationships with smaller families that wouldn't ask for too much contribution fees. So the distribution of commodity can be equal among all citizens, because the richer families, aiming to construct more, would pay taxes to the less fortunate families, building up their wealth. The city would support the people for taking initiative, and still hold power by virtue of promises and conducting authority in case of emergency needs. The property law in Crania is the pride and gile of our regiment.
Halo has guessed correctly one family, since only the Lafjlo's possess access to high quality rocks. The two others were creative decisions by Damien's dad. But he continued to try. Halo has always been enthusiastic about trade. He hopes to start his own store and grow rich one day, so rich no one would look down on him.
Damien lost track of Halo's endless chatter. He began thinking through the questions that blocked his learning. Soon, Mr. Ensho will hopefully have an answer.
