It occurred to me that I never actually gave some of the ideas for what I would've done with Hazbin Hotel, and decided late is better than never. I'm not going to go over every little thing in detail but might devote a piece of it to smaller gripes and ideas so as to not bog down this part. As usual, these are just my ideas on what I would've done in some other situations and my original opinion on Hazbin still stands true.
For the little stuff, it's not much. Most people have already talked about the excessive swearing, but the funny thing is that it's an easy fix. The citizens of Hell swearing isn't the issue but rather the angels which could be fixed by making them physically unable to swear by either having them physically unable to say the words or a sound that plays over their open mouths like a choir or chime. Charlie, wanting to be better and an obviously more innocent character, could choose not to swear as well with words like 'frick,' 'crap,' and other replacements that she chooses to use so that when she did swear it would mean more. The other gripe would be that it seems like there's no real punishment explained in the show despite taking place in Hell...a place of punishment. I know there are some out of show lore reasons, but that's never explained to us and the city just seems like a really crappy place to live where you're allowed to do whatever you want.
Anyway, onto the more plot focused stuff. First of all, remove the earlier extermination plot and remake the pilot as the first episode so that Charlie doesn't know that the extermination happens because of fear of rebellion rather than overpopulation. You can keep that other plot point, but there's no reason Charlie should know, so that she can learn the truth if they still go with the Heaven vs Hell idea (not necessary a problem by that if done right). However, this should be more of a season 2 thing (going on a 3 season idea, here) rather than a first season which should be more focused on them getting the hotel up and running and taken seriously. Even though they're going to be the villains of season 2, the V's should've been the main villains of season one because they are a step down from the leader of the exterminator angels.
The V's make more sense as a season one villain because they are a part of Hell and actively interfere with Charlie's plans along with two of them having beef with members of the main cast. Bring to light Valentino and Angel Dust's contract and treatment while also expanding on Alastor and Vox's rivalry. Have an inter-Hell problem that needs to be taken care of and start developing your characters. Show us Angel learning to lean on friends rather than drugs to get through the day, but also show him struggling with his withdrawals and maybe even a relapse which, in the actual show, happens completely off camera. Maybe keep it as a running thing throughout the series because giving up addictions is hard but Angel will have people to be there for him. Also, with Alastor reviving his feud with Vox, have the others be grateful for him being there to help them out and maybe start giving him a reason to actually stay and help out for more than just whatever deal he made, and have that as a little nugget of him starting to actual care for the main cast.
Of course, our heroes triumph over the villains, not destroying them but maybe proving that they aren't weak and stupid like everyone thinks, and more people start to wonder if Charlie's plan might actually have something behind it. Have it televised that the V's have been knocked down a peg by the Hazbin Hotel and maybe cut to Lucifer's arm in a chair as he watches the TV as a teaser for his appearance in season 2.
If we're still doing the Heaven vs Hell bit, this is where I think it should be teased at the end of season 2 after Lucifer and Charlie come to terms with each other and have the extermination plot being for season 3. Lucifer can still ask Charlie to meet with the head of the exorcists and plans to pitch her idea with some more generic examples of success to offer proof that her idea could work. You can still have Adam be the leader but rather than him being a frat boy douchebag, have him be a more solemn, reserved figure. Make him the leader by choice as a way for him to atone for the original sin and more sympathetic to the plight of the sinners, but unable to actually help them beyond freeing them from the torment of Hell through the exterminations. You can keep Lute, but if you really wanted a more bloodthirsty exterminator who was a Biblical figure...use Abel.
Abel was the first person to ever die, by the hands of his brother no less, so he would have perfect reason to hate the sinners. There can be a whole subplot with him and Cain, Abel wanting to kill Cain and Cain wanting to apologize and convince his brother that he didn't know he would die since no one had at that point. Have Adam keep Abel in check while explaining that there's nothing he can do about the exterminations but also make him understand Charlie just wants to help. This can lead to Abel later usurping his father's place and attacking the main cast and going rogue rather than following orders about the extermination. And in taking this route, letting our heroes win because heroes and all that, have them spare Abel and maybe a higher angel coming to get him to pass their own judgement and to show the main characters are actually becoming better and the angel can notice that. End the show here because it could be that the sinners realize there's no hope for true redemption and leaving Hell to get to Heaven, but they can try to be better where they are.
These ideas are just what I think could've changed my opinion on the show being fun but mid to an honestly, generally good show. Of course these are just some of my ideas and others might share these or disagree, but that's what this is for. I just felt the need to get this out and I did promise to give my ideas on things that I would've changed, and these are it.
Have a day
