We all go through an edgy phase at some point, some longer than others, but the point is we all do it. My main protagonist, Dante, was born during mine and I'm not entirely sure I ever outgrew some of my edge. My choice of Age of Sigmar army with be primarily Soulblight Gravelords which are legions of vampires and their undead minions. One of my favorite types in Pokémon is the Dark type with my favorite legenday/mythical being Darkrai. Beyond this, I'm not really an edgy guy, but I do know people who do take edginess to an extreme and have seen it in writing loads of times. 619Please respect copyright.PENANAs46ESKzxDS
The problem comes not from the creator trying to be edgy itself, but that there isn't really a reason behind the edge. Warhammer, Game of Thrones, Saw, Dark Souls and many other movies in shows that one might consider edgy make it a point as to why they are the way they are. Dark Souls finds the character wandering through a dead and dying world full of horrors and monsters. Warhammer and GoT are famously known as Grimdark worlds where no one is truly the good guy rather than just all are evil, but some are less so than others. Saw follows a dying man who wants to punish young people who he believes are wasting their lives while they still have life while he is dying. These creations, whether you enjoy them or not, are edgy but within some sense of reason rather than to be edgy for the sake of it.619Please respect copyright.PENANAAXeQp2atXh
On to what I mean by edgy for the sake of it, I'd like to bring up the Pokémon Adventures manga. Yes, I am aware that some manga tend to be darker than their anime (if they have one), I have read much of the Yu-gi-oh manga and enjoyed it, but the Pokémon manga just feels like a bunch of edgy teens trying to twist the story to make it dark. More so after generation 5, gym leaders, elite four and champion are seen as defenders of their regions, basically, even though it is still pretty much left to the MC to stop the bad guys. Well...the manga's approach to this is simple...make the elite 4 into terrorists. They did the same thing to Team Rocket in this manga, turning them from mafia-style thugs who are stealing Pokémon to make a profit to domestic terrorists which really takes away from what, I think, makes Giovanni such a great villain.619Please respect copyright.PENANAArC5Sx8IOe
Here are some more specifics of what I mean in the manga. Lance, dragon master of the Elite 4/Champion, nukes a portion of Vermillion City for reasons, causing thousands of casualties. Members of Kanto's Elite 4 decide to form a group that hates humanity and wants to wipe it off the face of the earth. Paparazzi force a character to become a shut in and possibly agoraphobic for being a talented young child, only for the two Kalos legendaries to get into a fight, something never established in games, and leveling their home town and traumatizing the characters. Gym leaders routinely attempt to murder the protagonists, most of which are literally still children going on their adventures to become Pokémon trainers. Hell, the Unova gym leaders get crucified after failing to stop Team Plasma. The problem is that there is no real rhyme or reason to why these changes were made given the already established lore from the games and anime which game long before the Pokémon Adventures manga. I have not read the mangas personally due to this fact even though, I will admit, I am mildly curious. 619Please respect copyright.PENANAaAwL3mjyqb
Again, the point is not to never be edgy, but to make sure it has a point. I have a WIP where my character is going to explore dark and edgy magic as something for him to learn control and to come into his own for while suffering the effects they bring on him. I have a reason in mind for adding this typically edgy thing into my work and I hope I can show this point for when it's relevant to the trilogy I am rewriting (no idea when I'm going to post it here, but it will come at some point, promise).619Please respect copyright.PENANAzlJWrBwIGo
