After Wang Meili's "Pink Final Exam" incident, the Supernatural Research Club gained a bit of fame in the community college (though more for being the club that turned things pink than for any real accomplishments). Ah-Zhai, too, became more enthusiastic about his "supernatural phenomenon research," carrying his camera everywhere, attempting to capture more "evidence" of the supernatural.
And as for Ah-Zhai's superpower—"Pause Time for 3 Seconds"—it was still... rather useless.
One day at lunch, the cafeteria was packed with students, all fighting for the last piece of fried chicken. Ah-Zhai joined the "fried chicken battle," quickly zeroing in on a plate with just one piece left.
“This is it!” Ah-Zhai thought to himself, quietly activating his superpower.
Suddenly, everything around him froze. The bustling crowd, the soup floating in mid-air, and even the loving gaze between a couple at a nearby table—everything was frozen in time.
Ah-Zhai grinned smugly, carefully reaching for the golden, crispy piece of fried chicken.
However, just as his fingers were about to touch it, he felt his foot slip.
“Thud!”
Ah-Zhai lost his balance and crashed to the floor.
As time resumed its normal flow, all the students around him saw him suddenly trip and fall with a loud thud. To make matters worse, the piece of fried chicken that was right there was snatched away by a quick-thinking chubby student.
Ah-Zhai lay on the floor, heartbroken, watching as the other student happily devoured the fried chicken he had so eagerly anticipated. His "Pause Time for 3 Seconds" seemed to always lead to more embarrassment than anything useful.
Such "time-pausing disasters" were a regular part of Ah-Zhai's daily life. He had once tried to secretly peek at a goddess's phone lock screen, but just as he pressed the pause button, a stray cat jumped out of nowhere and tripped him, causing him to fall flat on his face. He didn’t see the phone password and ended up embarrassing himself in front of the goddess.
Another time, during an exam, he tried to secretly change an answer, but as soon as time resumed, the invigilator caught him red-handed and suspected him of cheating.
The most ridiculous incident was when he saw an out-of-control cart heading straight for a child. He tried to use his superpower to save the child, but the 3 seconds of paused time only allowed him to run up, helplessly watching the cart brush past the child (luckily, the child was only lightly scratched). He, however, couldn’t recover in time when the pause ended and was knocked over by the cart.
Despite his superpower being so unreliable, Ah-Zhai never gave up on his dream of using it for "good." He always believed that one day, his "Pause Time for 3 Seconds" would serve a higher purpose at a crucial moment.
One day, the three of them were walking around the community when they suddenly saw a crowd gathered, seemingly caught up in some argument.
"What’s going on?" Lin Xiaoqiang asked, curious.
They saw a middle-aged woman pointing at a young man, shouting, "You thief! How dare you steal my wallet!"
The young man looked aggrieved as he protested, "I didn’t! I just bumped into you by accident!"
The situation was tense, and it looked like a physical altercation was about to erupt.
“Wait! There must be some misunderstanding!” Lin Xiaoqiang rushed forward to mediate.
Just then, Ah-Zhai’s eyes sharpened. He seemed to have noticed something.
“Um… ma’am, didn’t you accidentally drop your wallet on the ground just now?” Ah-Zhai pointed to the ground not far behind the middle-aged woman.
The woman froze for a moment, then looked down. Sure enough, she saw her wallet lying on the ground. Her angry expression instantly disappeared, replaced by a look of embarrassment.
“Oh! I’m so sorry! I misunderstood you, young man!” The woman quickly apologized to the young man.
The young man sighed in relief, waving his hands to show it was no problem.
The onlookers slowly dispersed, and a potential conflict was peacefully defused by Ah-Zhai’s seemingly casual comment.
Lin Xiaoqiang and Wang Meili exchanged surprised glances. They hadn’t expected that Ah-Zhai would solve a small crisis without even using his superpower.
“Ah-Zhai, how did you notice the wallet was on the ground?” Lin Xiaoqiang asked, curious.
Ah-Zhai pushed up his glasses, a shy smile spreading across his face. “Well… when they were arguing, I secretly used my superpower... Even though it was just 3 seconds, I saw that the woman’s wallet seemed to have slipped out of her bag…”
Lin Xiaoqiang and Wang Meili suddenly understood. It seemed that even though Ah-Zhai’s "useless" superpower often caused him trouble, it could sometimes lead to unexpected "small happy moments" in certain situations.
Perhaps every seemingly useless ability had its own worth after all.
