Analysis
The episode begins with dramatic music playing in the background. In the episode, the Wasabi and Wagarashi clan leaders are waiting for Idate and Fukusuke, respectively, at the race. Jirocho is wondering where Idate is. Furthermore, we are introduced to a new character who seems to be another elder in charge of the race. A servant tells the elder about a certain matter, and the servant goes on to say that they have uncovered some truth. He gives the elder the envelope. What could be the hidden truth? What is in the envelope? This leaves the audience even more curious, compelling them to continue watching the rest of the episode.
Meanwhile, the scene shifts to where Sasuke and Sakura are falling from a cliff. To survive, Sakura focuses her chakra on her feet to save herself and Sasuke. As a result, they are now safe and alive. Moreover, there is an important point to consider in the sense that Sakura has applied one of Kakashi’s teachings, where he taught Team 7 the importance of chakra control. Therefore, Kakashi has played a huge part in Team 7′s growth because they are utilising his teachings to become successful ninjas.
When Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno are defeated, it is up to Naruto to defeat Aoi so Idate can continue the race. After a few failed attacks, Naruto is finally able to defeat Aoi, which means Idate can continue the race. From this quotation, there is important information to consider. For instance, Naruto had to defeat Aoi so that Idate could continue the race. From my point of view, it gives a glimpse of what to expect from the episode. Furthermore, when Naruto prepares to fight Aoi, he tells Aoi that he is going to pay for what he did to his friends; hence, there is an intense atmosphere supported by a flute playing in the background, mixed with dramatic music.
While Naruto and Aoi are battling it out, Aoi wields the blade of the Thunder Spirit (the second Hokage’s sword), while Naruto uses the Multi-Shadow clone Jutsu. For instance, Naruto activated his Shadow Clone Jutsu, and while he did that, the music shifted to an electric guitar in the background to signify that Naruto had the upper hand against Aoi. Moreover, the music also has that drum effect to show that this battle is about to get serious. However, the shadow clones are no match for the blade of the Thunder Spirit, so Naruto resorted to using the Rasengan, but it was also a failure. However, despite the odds against Naruto, he refuses to give up, which shows that Naruto is the type of character who never gives up until he has tried everything. It is his nindo, his ninja way, that makes him one of the most interesting characters in the anime “Naruto.”
Meanwhile, Aoi believes that Sakura and Sasuke are dead. Yet Naruto gives an interesting answer. He said, “I won’t abandon my friends; I will never run away.” Naruto is loving and caring towards the people he cares about, especially his friends. Moreover, Naruto said, “I haven’t forgotten my answer to the 10th question.” Naruto is referring to the time when Team 7 attended the Chunin exam, where he refused to abandon his friends. Therefore, this results in Naruto using the Rasengan again, which causes dramatic music to play in the background with a mix of a deep guitar sound. However, Naruto fails to defeat Aoi, and Aoi keeps tormenting Naruto, saying that Naruto doesn’t have a chance to defeat him. While Aoi laughs, Naruto notices something about his blade.
Naruto notices a crack on the blade of the Thunder Spirit. At that moment, he realised that Sasuke must have put a crack in it using his Chidori. Therefore, Naruto is observant as he comes up with a plan: he just needs to hit the crack on the blade. Therefore, Naruto is clever and strategic and believes that he can win the fight. Meanwhile, Aoi becomes arrogant and cocky, believing that Naruto doesn’t stand a chance against him as dramatic music still plays in the background. Therefore, Naruto decides to use the Shadow Clone Jutsu one more time. Meanwhile, Idate seems to realise Naruto’s strength, from the time when Naruto saved him from falling off a cliff to the time when Team 7 kept on protecting him. Therefore, this influences Idate to do something about the battle between Aoi and Naruto.
Meanwhile, Naruto prepares the Rasengan, and Aoi still thinks it’s a waste of time; however, he is not aware of Naruto’s plan. While Idate threw a rock at Aoi, it caused Aoi to let his guard down when he decided to go after him. At this moment, this could be what Idate meant when he had to do something. Moreover, thanks to Idate’s interference, Naruto prepares for his attack on Aoi. Therefore, Aoi has played a significant part in this episode, as things are about to get interesting.
Dramatic music plays in the background with a mix of Japanese guitars when Naruto activates the Rasengan. To finalise the battle, the Rasengan breaks the blade of the Thunder Spirit. Aoi is shocked, and while he lets his guard down, Naruto comes after him with the Rasengan. Moreover, the moment gets intense until Aoi is finally defeated as he falls down the cliff. When he witnessed Naruto’s victory, Idate told Naruto that he didn’t believe it and that it was incredible. Therefore, Naruto’s never-giving-up attitude has proven to have positive results. Afterwards, Sakura encourages Idate and Naruto to finish the race.
Though Fukusuke is already near the finish line, with determination and encouragement from Naruto, Idate manages to catch up and win the race, saving the Wasabi Clan. A lot has happened. Since Aoi had cut the rope on the bridge, one couldn’t pass through. Therefore, to pass to the other side, Idate suggests that Naruto cut the rope so that they can get to the other side. When Naruto and Idate were on the rope, Idate made an interesting point. He said that he never really thought highly of himself, but Master Jirocho always had faith in him. It never happened to Idate before. No one believed in him, hence why Idate wanted to win this race.
However, he realised that wanting to win was not good enough. There were times he almost lost hope, but whenever that happened, Team 7 risked their lives to save him, no matter how useless he was. Idate apologises to Naruto and says he should have trusted Team 7 from the beginning. Afterwards, Idate gives Naruto a knife he was given by Master Jirocho to cut the rope. At that moment, one can see a shift in Idate’s character. He has learned an important lesson: it is not enough to want to win the race; he has to take action to win the race. He now believes in himself that he will win the race; hence, he is a dynamic character who has grown due to the story’s actions.
At the end of the race, Fukusuke is almost at the finish line. And the crowd is not happy about it. For instance, there is auditory imagery when the crowd says “boooo” and visual imagery when the crowd puts their thumbs down. This is used to highlight that Fukusuke and his clan are the enemies of the Wasabi clan. Meanwhile, at the cliff, Naruto focuses his chakra on his feet to get him and Idate to the other side. Naruto has also applied one of Kakashi’s teachings to survive, just like Sakura; hence, Kakashi’s role plays a huge part in Team 7′s development as ninjas.
Meanwhile, at the race, Idate arrives as victory music with a mix of electric guitar playing in the background. To signify his victory, Idate starts running with massive speed. Then a Japanese flute starts playing when Idate says he won’t lose the race. Afterwards, a Japanese guitar starts playing in the background to signify Idate’s determination to win the race. The music gets louder when Idate is now at the same level as the opponent. Moreover, Jirocho and Naruto cheering for Idate to win the race was the final push for Idate to win. Lastly, there is a moment of silence when two opponents are both at the same level, and then Idate wins the race. As a result, music starts playing in the background to signify Idate’s victory.
After witnessing Idate winning the match, Jirocho is proud of Idate for winning the race. However, the Wagarashi clan refuses to accept defeat, suggesting that Idate got help from Naruto. They went on to say that it was against the rules. However, the other elder (the one who received the envelope at the beginning of the episode) says there is no such rule. He also mentioned the evidence that the Wagarashi clan leaders were accepting bribes. As a result, the Japanese flute starts playing in the background to signify that their crimes are exposed; hence, the clan no longer exists, and Idate remains the winner of the race.
Meanwhile, at the seashore, Idate meets his big brother, Ibiki. Idate remembers the answer to the 10th question for the Chunin exam. The answer was to never betray a comrade. Although Ibiki seems not to have taken notice of his brother, his smile suggests that he is proud of him. He gets on the boat with Team 7, where Ibiki also says in his mind that Naruto is interesting, proving why Naruto is the protagonist of the anime “Naruto.” Moreover, Idate and Ibiki have finally made peace; hence, they have a close relationship as brothers. Although everyone is happy, there is one ninja in the boat who seems sad, and which is Sasuke Uchiha.
Sasuke is disappointed in himself for not being able to defeat Aoi, while Naruto defeats him. He is frustrated and angry, which serves as a bad sign that something bad will happen.
The lesson from this episode is that to achieve something, one shouldn’t give up until one accomplishes it, just like Naruto did when he defeated Aoi. It also teaches one that wanting something isn’t enough. One has to do something to get it, just like Idate did when he won the race.
