Across the way

My eyes locked

A girl staring into the stream as if it’s her only escape

Her fingers clasped onto the stone

Trying to find way to hold her back

A sign of reluctance?

A sign of guilt?

Her hair grazed her skin,

jagged like glass

Splitting the skin

Eyes succumbed to toxins

The stare of strangers

The weight of pain

I watch her from afar

My body itches to move forward

To hold her

To be the hand that holds her back,

Or goes down with her

It’s Valentine’s Day.

Did you know?

The day of love and chocolates and roses

The day you only focus on the ones you love

Sometimes there are haters

And sometimes you can love them

Maybe because they’re the only ones there for you to love

I saw a picture once, at a school,

There was a bridge that said, ‘are you sure?’

Many people jump to escape the surface of life

To dive underneath into darkness

The, ‘are you sure?’ is a hopeless way to help

It’s just a writing on the wall

I don’t want to be a writing on a wall

I want to go and help her

Can I?

Should I?

Should I let her story fold out how she wants?

Or is this not what she wants?

I stand up without thinking

I advance till my hand overlaps hers

I feel her imaginary arms holding onto me

Clutching to my body

It’s Valentine’s Day.

Did you know?

The day she could’ve been home with someone she loves

But she’s here with me

Holding on to me figuratively

I hold her against me

A hold of hope

I watch as a man approach,

he slips a rose between my fingers

Her eyes drifted up

The pieces of glass that were once shattered are together once more

I slip the flower into her hand

Will she change her mind?

Will I go with her or stay with her?

We love and we cherish

We hold each other for a day,

Hoping that we can stay like this forever
