Ramblings - On the importance of street art

Unfortunately, I appear to be one of those people who ask myself equally important yet contradicting ideas at once, and they both need to be answered immediately in order for me to go on with my day, or else I’m reduced to a rocking mess in the corner of the world. It’s insane but it’s how I function, and I’m sure that it wouldn’t be too long ago that someone like this would have been locked up irrevocably, electric eel turban and all. Regarding this rather twisted phenomenon of my thought process (can you even call it that?), something has been bothering me and making me question my love for street art as of late.

Firstly. The IB English side. What is the point of street art? What purpose does it serve in society? What message is it trying to convey? What does it teach us, its audience?

Secondly, does there have to be a point? Can’t something just be beautiful for the fact that it’s beautiful? Or ugly for the fact that it’s ugly? Why does everything have to have a hidden meaning? One example of this is the ‘curtain-color-life’ metaphor. Supposedly, if a character in a novel has a particular color of curtains, such as dark blue, it means that they are depressed. Because…dark blue curtains equates to depression. Because dark blue. Check your curtains. Are they blue? You depressed bruh.

…Right?

However, does it have to be like that, with the over analyzing and the essays and the head hurt? Yes, the antagonist has dark blue curtains. Why? Does it say something about his childhood? Is he emotionally scarred inside? Does it foreshadow the plot twist that’s about to happen?

Or, maybe, just maybe, it’s because he likes the color blue. Why? Because blue is nice. It’s that simple, or it can be, if we can just calm ourselves for a minute. No depression here, children. Move on, IB English teachers. Move on.

And that, my friend who never even asked to know the answer, is the awesomeness of street art. It’s so awesome that it doesn’t need to have a purpose. Sure you can attack it with the ‘curtain-is-life’ metaphors, but on the flip side, it can just be admired for what it is. Nothing less, nothing more.
