Dreefall was a hopeless city nestled in the edge of Britain. The gloomy weather here was endless, and when the sun did shine it was out weighted by the large buildings all over the city. Dawn looked at the rainy skies, feeling miserable. It felt like the fate that would befall her as she would go to the Hion academy entering year 10; it was one of the top schools in the country, they were very strict and Dawn felt lonely not having many people that she could relate to.
She looked at herself in the mirror, as she combed her long tangled, dark hair, internally cursing herself for not brushing it after taking a shower last night. Her skin was pale and her eyes were sunken from not getting enough sleep, still worrying about her classes, and Lia and Ella Erwing, the two sisters and her friend Tera Sanjeev, the most popular girls in school, who liked to make her life hell; in their own patronising way. They would also try to belittle her and make her feel like she didn’t belong in the school, which of course Dawn knew she didn’t. However, her father put so much effort in to trying to get her in the best Academy in Dreefall.
She put on her uniform, and applied a a little bit of lip balm, with a raspberry tinted gloss, the only make up that was allowed here. However, some girls wore natural looking make up and got away with it.
She packed her bags and made her way to her 8 ‘o’ clock French class. Sitting on a desk at the back of the classroom, waiting for Madam Claudia to enter. She heard the footsteps and voices of her fellow classmates, but drowned out the noise in her mind as she opened her textbook. Three girls walked in the room, and Dawn already knew who they were because the rest of the class raised their voices in greeting. It was Lia, Ella and Tera. Lia and Ella were identical twins, and you could tell them apart from the way the parted their hair, they both wore their hair in ponytails, with a fringe Ella parted to the right and Lia parted to the left. Tera had long braided hair and dusky skin. And despite sitting at the back of the class hoping not to get noticed by anyone, the three girls made their way to Dawn.
‘Dawn so good to see you after the school holidays, been doing much?’, Ella said.
‘Not really’, she replied.
‘Well, we went overseas, it was tropical vacation, you know to get out of this city’.
‘Hmm, That’s nice’.
‘It was amazing, but you probably have never been abroad have you?’
‘Not interested at the moment’.
‘Ella, don’t embarrass her, by talking about all the things she can’t afford’, Lia said.
Here we go again Dawn thought, the verbal torture and nonsense these girls put her through.
‘I mean it was only last year when she couldn’t even afford the uniforms remember? Lia whispered to her sister, loud enough for the whole class to hear. Dawn felt the sting of tears burning in her eyes, but she refused to let them see that their words would effect her. Just then, Madam Claudia walked into the class, wearing a a grey blazer, and pencil skirt, with the symbol of Hion academy on the crest.
She stayed quiet the rest of the class, pulling out strands of hair to cover her teary eyes.
A girl with blazing red flowing hair and boots walks into the classroom half an hour late. The whole class looked up and started to whisper.
‘Sorry, I’m late’, the girl said
Madam Claudia takes a look at her and eyes her up down adjusting her glasses.
‘Ah, yes Bridget is it? I’ll let it pass this time since you are new, but the hair is unacceptable, tie it.’
Bridget sighs puts her satchel down on the floor and ties her quickly in a bun.
‘Those shoes are unacceptable too, change them before our next class, take a seat. ’ madam Claudia said.
Bridget sighs and takes a seat at the back of the class next to Dawn. Something like electric buzzed through dawn when she met Bridget’s eyes, almost like she had seen the girl before. She ignored the feeling, thinking it was just the cold.

This is the first year Dawn was taking a drama class, since she needed an artistic extracurricular subject to balance out the rest. It was scary, but her mom also agreed that it would help with her confidence.
The drama classroom was the only room in an otherwise grey building that had colour.
She took a seat in the second row, with her hands in her lap, she felt stupid for getting her mom to convince her take the class. She felt that this class was different from the strict structures of the other subjects. It was much more expressive. The classroom filled, and Dawn wasn’t surprised to see Ella, as she loved this sort of thing. She sighed and decided she would not let her ruin this experience. And as she looked up she saw Nathan SkyHigh, the boy she had a crush on since she was in the 8th grade. His raven flow cut, black hair and charismatic nature, had caught her eye. They had only spoken about three times, once in maths class when he asked her if she had an extra pencil, and then in biology when he was her lab partner, and in gym class when she passed him a towel as he was running and she sat on the bleachers. He sat in front of her and then the teacher Miss Daniella, wearing the same grey uniform the other teachers, except she had a humming bird pin.
‘Alright class, looks like we have some new bright faces’, her voice was cheery much unlike the other educators.
‘Let’s start out class with an exercise to get to know each other, but instead of introducing yourselves you will let someone else introduced you. Now the person sitting behind you to the left will be your partner, turn around look at them and switch seats. The person sitting right in front of Dawn was Nathan and as she looked at him, her heart felt heavy and her cheeks begin heat. He had the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen. He walked over and sat beside her, and just smiled, she returned a small smile.
‘Right now class you shall begin your introductions as you interview the person sitting next to you, write everything down and then you will present it to the class.’
She wasn’t sure but she thought she could sense Ella’s sharp gaze on her from a distance.
Dawn felt so nervous as he sat next to her. His cologne was refreshing. She gulped.
‘Shall we begin?’ He asked.
‘Sure’.
‘So, my name is Nathan SkyHigh, you’re…’
‘Dawn Mist’.
‘Of course, we’ve met before’. She pulled a strand of hair and tucked it behind her ear.
‘So, Dawn tell me about yourself. Or would you like me to go first?’
‘You can go first’.
‘Well, I am 5ft11’, he says casually, ‘I love hockey and spend most of my time playing sports, working out, I hope to be a pilot like my dad some day. I like going to parties, and travelling. She wrote everything down blushing with shaking hands. She didn’t know if this was good luck, it was a chance to talk to the boy she liked, but she never thought she’d would approach him like this.
‘You’re turn’.
Maybe it was bad luck after all, besides school and writing Dawn didn’t have much of a life.
‘Umm, I like to read, a spend time with Jasper my cat’.
‘Cool. What kind of books?’
‘Romance, uh…well fantasy. Fiction.’
‘That’s nice’.
‘And I like to write in my spare time’.
‘What do you write about?’
‘Poetry, journaling and stories’.
‘That’s nice, it suits you’, he said smiling. And Dawn sinked into his smile.
‘Anything else?’
‘Dreaming’, Dawn said surprising herself.
‘Dreaming?’
‘Well, my dreams are quite vivid, I keep seeing crystals and the ocean and…’ she stoped herself from continuing seeing his confused gaze. ‘I dream of getting out of here one day’.
‘Really?’
‘What about you, do you ever think about leaving?’ She said softly.
‘A vacation would be nice, away from all this rain.’
‘I would like that too’.
‘We should plan something together then.’ He said whimsically. What did he mean by that? Was he just teasing? Dawn thought.
‘Alright class, time is up’ Miss Daniella announced.
Nathan smiled and put down his pen. Ella and Stacy, a girl with a high ponytail and glasses went first, Ella proud of her interview as it included details of her highly social and lavish lifestyle.
Nathan and Dawn were next, and she felt nervous standing next him, he was tall and she was a lot shorter than him. They stood at the front of class to read their interview sheets.
‘Alright! Who’s going first?’ Miss Daniella asked.
‘I’ll go,’ Nathan said confidently. Dawn felt her cheeks burn.
‘Dawn Mist is 15 years old, she loves reading, writing and spending time with Jasper her cat, and she has beautiful smile, sorry added that last one myself.’
Dawn felt light headed and before she knew it it was her turn, she thought it was her imagination but she could feel Ella throwing daggers with her gaze.
She felt like her whole body was burning up, and she felt faint.
‘Uhh..Nathan Skyhigh is 5ft11. He likes sports, especially hockey, he plays hockey, and in his spare time he likes socialising, going to parties and traveling’. Nathan looked at her and winked. What did that mean? Was he trying to make her more nervous? Did it mean something else?. Dawn had no experience dealing with boys or even the concept of dating, other than reading about romance.
‘Okay, next group’ miss Daniella announced.
They rest of the class was quiet, Dawn not wanting to say anything, so she just looked down at her lap.

During lunch Dawn usually sat alone in the cafeteria, and sometimes if she was lucky she could sneak into the garden and eat her food quietly without getting caught. Today she opted to eat in the cafeteria. She always felt eerie when she was here. Like there was a knot in her stomach.
As she sat down she could here the loud chatter from the girls in the other table.

Nathan was popular with everyone in school, including the three girls that she detested. She watched as he made his way towards their table laughed and spoke to them in a friendly way; the only thing she didn’t like about him was his choice in friends. She watched him greet other friends and then walk out of the cafeteria, just a while ago that was the same smile he gave her. Dawn’s heart sank, he got along with everyone, while she was the complete opposite.
Dawn often wrote about him in her diary, as well as other things she could never tell anyone, like the dreams she often had, about far off places and crystals, it was the reason she named her cat Jasper, she often dreamed of various crystals and would look them up on her computer the next day. Jasper was an very earthy crystal, used for grounding oneself and to relive anxiety, she thought it was the perfect name for her little kitten; her companion and a friendly face to look forward to seeing. As Dawn was eating her lunch, using the chatter as white noise, she began writing about how she felt, when a sudden voice caught her off guard.
‘Surprising to see you here today’, Ella spoke as she was on her way out.
‘I’m really not interested in taking to you right now’, Dawn said still looking down at her book.
‘That’s bold. You’re lucky I’m even here’.
Dawn continued to ignore Ella. The next thing she knew Lia and Tera had arrived and she was surrounded.
They looked at her with disdain. ‘There is something off with your uniform. Is it the original?’ Ella said.
‘Why are you so obsessed with the clothes I wear?’, Dawn returned with agitation. Ella puffed with anger, her pale face was turning red.
‘You little—‘
‘Let’s check’, Tera announced.
Tera walked over slammed Dawn’s head on the table, while Ella looked at the label on her dress.
‘There is no label, it’s a fake’, Ella announced They had the whole cafeteria’s attention, and the students started to laugh.
Dawn struggled but all three girls were holding her arms and shoulders down.
Just then a strong hand wrenched her free.
‘What do you think you’re doing?’ A voice said with indignation.
Dawn rubbed her shoulder, her eyes burning with tears, she looked up and saw Bridget Hexfire.
‘Bridget, mind your own business’, Ella said.
‘How can I can when you’re basically a criminal harassing people’ Bridget said in a fiery tone,
‘You brat’, Lia retorted.
Bridget helped dawn stand up and collect her things.
‘Let’s go’, she said, and she held her hand as they both walked out of the cafeteria, while everyone watched. Dawn felt numb like a doll be carried out.
She just let Bridget take lead her and they walked to a courtyard.
